We’re living in the age of “audible” – embedded earphones with special sensors for talking on our phones. And apple earbuds, those tiny little earbuds that in any case live in the form of a tick-box, are leading the trend.
For years, I have found earbuds to be as convenient as they are useful. When Apple introduced them in the 21st, it popularized wireless earphones with a special chip that connects them to the iPhone. When I stuck them in my ear, they connected seamlessly to my device. And when I put them back in, their battery is full again.
Now the earbuds are getting smarter – and expensive. The previous generation earbuds cost around $ 150. The latest model, the earbuds Pro, is more expensive at $ 249.
However, the new earphones released almost a month ago offer sound-canceling technology. They use a microphone to hear ambient sounds and sound like the roaring engines in an office in the ear, and in the office to chatter the background to your ears.
Earbuds Pro has a neat new feature called Transparency Mode, which you activate by holding down the button on an earbud stem. Earphones then use their microphones to amplify the sounds around you, so you can hear more clearly around you while listening to a podcast or music. This is seen as my favorite new feature.
How good are the new apple earbuds for so much money? Compared with other high-end headphones, the earbuds are not the best at dismissing the noise. Yet they are capable and of a good overall value, and to this day, no one can defeat the advantages of their compact design.
on a plan
For me, noise canceling headphones are the most effective on the plane. The seat of nature makes it difficult to sleep the noises of the engines with the conversation of neighbors. So I wore the new earbuds on a recent 14-hour flight. I’ve gotten several downsides. For one, noise-canceling jolted the noise of some of the aircraft’s engines, but not enough to allow me to sleep. And since the earbuds are wireless, I couldn’t plug them in the front screen of my seat to watch movies.
As for the old earbuds, I never thought they were good enough to hear a song or a podcast on the sound of the engine. In the past, whenever I traveled I kept earbuds at home.
Verdict: For frequent travelers, I recommend larger, more effective sound-canceling headphones like the Bose.
On a train
I wore the new apple earbuds Pro on several trains in the Bay Area Rapid Transit system. With the sound-cancellation going on, the ear-to-ear sounded good and the conversations around me did a great job of sinking. But when the train stopped to scream, the ear plates were ineffective in weakening the sound of the ear plating.
On a similar test, my Bose headphones looked great on the train, but they couldn’t brake too loud. This is to be expected: In general, noise-canceling technology reduces low-frequency words, while high-frequency words such as babies do not make baby screams.
At Burt, when I got ordinary earbuds, I could hear something from the earbuds in my ear. I often didn’t bother to use them on the train.
Verdict: On noisy trains, the earbuds Pro is just as great as other noise-canceling earphones and is much better than ordinary earbuds.
On the streets
The new apple earbuds were great to use outside. By turning on Transparency Mode, I was able to concentrate on listening to cars and walking around in a less secure neighborhood while crossing the road.
In contrast, Bose headphones lacked transparency mode (though some other Bose models have features). I often take them outside in need of protection.
Verdict: Apple earbuds Pro has become my go-to earphone for going out to the grocery store and doing things like walking my dog. A bonus: because of their smaller size, they made it easier to go.
On the phone
After some experimentation, I learned that transparency mode is best for phone conversations on the new apple earbuds. People’s voices were heard loud and clear on the earphones, but just as important, I could hear myself better, which helped me to be more focused on listening to the sounds and made me feel more confident in all things.
Whenever I called on Bose headphones, I heard the person I was calling very clearly, but I found myself confused which was satirical.
I also enjoyed taking calls on older earbuds, partly because they quickly connected to my phone when a call came. But being able to hear yourself better in transparency mode on the Pro model is a big difference.
